| iPhone3GS announced + iPhone OS 3.0 release date |
| AT&T - iPhone3G$ |
|
6:24pm PST |
|
So Apple finally announced the next iteration of the iPhone. "The S stands for SPEED" is what they said during the conference. Basically its an iPhone3G with faster hardware, faster 3G speed, longer battery life, a much improved camera that records/edits video, a digital compass, and voice activated features ("call so and so","next track","play songs by killers", etc).
Pretty good upgrades to the current iPhone3G imo. For NEW customers 16gig version will be $199 and 32gig version will be $299. So basically same price for new customers as the current iPhone3G. At the same time though, they will CONTINUE TO SELL the regular 3G 8gig version at a new price of $99 (3G 16gig versions will be $149 while supplies last)
A lot of current customers are upset at the price for existing customers though. If you've had a 3G for less than a year, there is no upgrade discount, so you pay full retail at $599/$699 for 16gig/32gig of the iPhone3GS with no contract. If you've had a phone for a year, you can get an early upgrade discount at $399/$499 for the 16gig/32gig version. After two years, you can get the $199/$299 discount for 16/32gig versions.
So thats why a lot of people have labeled it the iPhone3G$.
Anywho, thats typical upgrade pricing/subsidizing from AT&T so its expected imo. Hardware wise, I like my 3G as is, and don't even feel like $199 is worth the upgrade.
iPhone OS 3.0 will be out June 17th and will bring with it copy-paste/mms/turn by turn directions/youtube enhancements/bluetooth adhoc gameplay/micropayment additions to software/tethering so theres plenty to look forward to on the regular 3G still. (Although MMS and tethering won't be available until end of the summer and tethering will likely cost extra)
So yeah, AT&T is sucking (carriers around the world will support MMS and Tethering at launch, but not AT&T), Apple's new hardware wasn't earthshattering, but the announcement of keeping the 3G around at a reduced rate has me interested. I feel like everyone should have an iPhone like device, and cutting the price down definitely helps. Now they just need to reduce the monthly rate and all will be great! |

| Subversion |
|
3:13pm PST |
|
So way back in December (I may have written about it back then) I setup a Subversion server at home. I was using it for a Java project I was working on at the time (which won't be released for quite a while still... and not even in Java!) Anyhow, since then I've been doing more research (100's if not 1000's of pages of reading) than coding, so I haven't used it much. I'm finally at a point now though that I can start working on real projects again. So I set out to make the Subversion server accessible across my network..
Spent a large chunk of last night doing it, but now that its all up and running smoothly, I've got to say, I LOVE source control! I think its awesome when you have systems/services on one OS and have it accessible and understandable on totally different OS'. For example, you can host a website on a linux machine, and windows/mac/linux/cell phones can access it. In my case, I have a subversion server setup on Windows, and I'm using it on a Mac. Its not too difficult to know why and how it works, but I think its awesome that it just does work. |

| Lucky me! |

So I've been pretty lucky lately. The other day I got an email saying I won the Star Trek Rock Band sweepstakes grand prize (valued at $1.99 lol) for ONE free DLC song. They gave out like, 500 a day or something for 2 weeks straight. Ends in 3 days, so go enter if you want a chance at winning!
Then just the other day, I got an email saying I won the LEGENDS OF WRESTLEMANIA game from the WrestlingOnline newsletter I've been receiving for like..10+ years! So awesome! I need to go enter more online sweepstakes!
BTW, I'll put up a permanent link here soon, but I setup a Twitter account. So for more frequent random little updates, check it out at http://www.twitter.com/reepal |

| Ninja Warrior (Ninjafest) |
| Tempe Dragonboating |
|
1:17am PST |
|
So, this past weekend, went to NINJAFEST (G4's American version Ninja Warrior). The course was a big let down from the actual one since there was no water to fall into, and it wasnt near as long, and no one really "failed" since they keep letting people go as far as they wanted to. Worst part was how disorganized the whole thing was, so although the course time limit was 1 minute, it would take like 10-20 mins PER person to go up there. So because of that they ran out of time, and not everyone (me and everyone I went with) didnt get to do the course. Lame. I guess the only good part is that it airs on June 20th or 21st and we were there making noise in the crowd for most of it. So I guess there's a good chance we'll get on TV one way or another (although that TOTALLY wasnt even the goal)
Also, went to Tempe, Arizona the previous weekend for dragonboating. My first competition out with my new team (Space Dragons! Oh yeah, dragons totally from outer space!) Tons of fun. Bunch of pics are on Facebook, and I'm too lazy to repost them here, so bleh...
Saw Fast & Furious and that was pretttty damn good for what it is. Check it out if you liked any of the previous ones. I've realllly been wanting to edit a video together lately. Something sync'd to music. Creative juices flowing just not enough time for everything! |

| It has begun! |
| And mashups |
|
11:33pm PST |
|
Man, these months are going by fast. You know its sad but true! Moved offices recently and have been having a buttload of wireless issues. Not really sure what it is yet though. I thought it was a range issue, so I bought a wireless extender, and that kind of worked, but failed to be GOOD. Then I just wired the router to the center of our office, and that seemed to work okay, until today, when everything went crazy. So I went and bought some hi gain antenna's, gonna try them out tomorrow, and hopefully it works okay.
Also, grabbed a BATTERY!, BAAATTERY from Frys today for my motherboard. Hopefully now my system will boot after a shutdown! Yes, progress!
Speaking of Metallica, they're touring North America again this Fall. December 10th, tickets go on sale April 11th, Anaheim - Honda Center. Lets go!
BTW, I've been getting into mashups lately. Where they take the vocal track from one song, and put it over the instrumental of another song, etc. This one dude makes some crazy ones with Metallica. Emphasis on CRAZY. Metallica makes EVERYTHING better. Check it out here:

| Street Fighter 4 released! |
|
4:26pm PST |
|
Not sure if I mentioned this before, but I figured out why Obama pushed back the DTV transition from February 17th! He obviously wanted the country to spend their money on Street Fighter 4 and High School Musical 3 instead of on converter boxes!
Anywho, last Thursday, went to the launch party in LA. They had a red carpet event, and had some random celebrities there (Michael Duncan Clark, Bai Ling, some girl from Lost, Black Eyed Peas, Chris Klein, random others). I think half of them showed up just to get their pictures at the carpet and went home.
SF4 Box + poster I got from launch party (signed by producer) + Chun Li statue thinger I also got from launch party

Time to go try this thing out! |

| Happy New Year Everyone! |
| Supervolcanos! |
|
4:42am PST |
|
So.. 2009 already..crazyness. This year..I resolve to.. release an iPhone app! Or 3!
Btw.. not to be a downer or anything, but have you guys heard about the whole world ending in 2012 thing. Well, this is about the only plausible way I can see it actually happening..SUPERVOLCANOS..
If anyone can find part 2 of this let me know. But basically, there are these hotspots of lava in certain locations of the earth, underneath the continental plates, so while the plates move, these locations remain stationary. Anywho, every so long (think millions of years), these things go off with devastating results.
We have one in Yellowstone, that went off 2.1 million years ago, 1.3 million years ago, and 640,000 years ago... do the math. SOME people say thats not a big enough data set to conclude anything.. but if it IS.. then we're getting awfully close to due for it eh?
So what happens? Basically a bunch of lava gets shot up and lava balls land hundreds of miles away, and boatloads of ash get shot into the sky, blocking out the sun and sending us into an ice age. Pretty much 80% of the USA will be covered in ash. Because of the current jetstream pattern, Southern California might actually be okay.. relatively speaking hehe.
I should mention that I'd never heard of a super volcano before. I was tipped off by this article on DailyTech about recent quakes in Yellowstone bringing up fears that the supervolcano might be warming up. Dun DUn DuuUuUuUuUUUn |

Hmm... about as good as I expected it would look.. although, I REALLY thought they'd try harder after the first Street Fighter movie failed so badly:

| iPhone killer? ZunePhone? |
| Nvidia APX 2500 |
|
7:13am PST |
|
This video is a little old and I know some of you have already seen it, but this is a new graphics chip for mobile phones made by Nvidia (APX2500). I think its due to hit by Q2 2009. My guess is that Microsoft is going to pick it up and make a ZunePhone to compete with the iPhone. I'm not sure what sales are for Zunes, but I assume Microsoft was Sony's only really big competitor in the mp3/portable media player category. Competing with the iPhone seems like the next logical step to me, and this chipset from Nvidia looks like it will deliver.
There's also been a lot of rumors and speculation about Steve Jobs health since he isn't going to be giving the presentation at MacWorld this coming Jan 5-9. Another thing to note is that this is Apples last year presenting at MacWorld, so maybe they're not planning on unveiling anything big there since it might show a dependence on the event? Other guesses are that Apple doesnt have anything big to announce, so they're not sending Steve Jobs in to do it. OR perhaps they're just trying to set someone up to be the NEXT BIG guy at Apple (like Steve Balmer at Microsoft when Bill Gates was still the main dude).
Whatever the reason, it'll be interesting to see if they unveil the next iteration of the iPhone at Macworld. I'm wondering if Apple is holding out on it to see what manufacturers do with Nvidia's chipset first. Maybe they're anticipating a ZunePhone release on Nvidia's chipset as well and want to make sure their next iteration doesn't get beat out in a single quarter. Interesting times ahead... |
