So Apple finally announced the next iteration of the iPhone. "The S stands for SPEED" is what they said during the conference. Basically its an iPhone3G with faster hardware, faster 3G speed, longer battery life, a much improved camera that records/edits video, a digital compass, and voice activated features ("call so and so","next track","play songs by killers", etc).
Pretty good upgrades to the current iPhone3G imo. For NEW customers 16gig version will be $199 and 32gig version will be $299. So basically same price for new customers as the current iPhone3G. At the same time though, they will CONTINUE TO SELL the regular 3G 8gig version at a new price of $99 (3G 16gig versions will be $149 while supplies last)
A lot of current customers are upset at the price for existing customers though. If you've had a 3G for less than a year, there is no upgrade discount, so you pay full retail at $599/$699 for 16gig/32gig of the iPhone3GS with no contract. If you've had a phone for a year, you can get an early upgrade discount at $399/$499 for the 16gig/32gig version. After two years, you can get the $199/$299 discount for 16/32gig versions.
So thats why a lot of people have labeled it the iPhone3G$.
Anywho, thats typical upgrade pricing/subsidizing from AT&T so its expected imo. Hardware wise, I like my 3G as is, and don't even feel like $199 is worth the upgrade.
iPhone OS 3.0 will be out June 17th and will bring with it copy-paste/mms/turn by turn directions/youtube enhancements/bluetooth adhoc gameplay/micropayment additions to software/tethering so theres plenty to look forward to on the regular 3G still. (Although MMS and tethering won't be available until end of the summer and tethering will likely cost extra)
So yeah, AT&T is sucking (carriers around the world will support MMS and Tethering at launch, but not AT&T), Apple's new hardware wasn't earthshattering, but the announcement of keeping the 3G around at a reduced rate has me interested. I feel like everyone should have an iPhone like device, and cutting the price down definitely helps. Now they just need to reduce the monthly rate and all will be great! |
